Your Next Customer Might Not Be Human

Picture this. It's three in the morning, and a retail chain's replenishment system notices it's about to run short of point-of-sale posters before a weekend campaign that spans three regions. Nobody on the marketing team is awake to fix it. Instead, an AI agent, acting on the priorities its owner gave it, checks which print suppliers can be trusted to deliver on time, reads their published capabilities the way a person would read a shop window, picks one, configures the job and places the order. By the time anyone logs in the next morning, the job is already running. No phone call, no quote request, no person in the loop.

That's not a thought experiment anymore. Since January 2026, some of the biggest names in retail and technology, Google, Shopify, Walmart and Target among them, have been rolling out open protocols that let AI agents shop on behalf of people and businesses. The best known is Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP. A German consultancy, zipcon consulting, recently published a widely discussed white paper that puts a name on what this could mean for our industry: Agentic Print. We don't think Agentic Print is going to rescue newspaper circulation. The decline in print runs has causes that no purchasing protocol touches, and the white paper's own author says so plainly. But it does point at something worth taking seriously if you run a printing operation: your next customer might genuinely not be a person. And whether that customer can find you, trust you, and complete an order without ever picking up the phone comes down to one thing you already control today, how well structured your production data is.

Three questions, no marketing budget required

The white paper proposes a simple test for what it calls being "agent-ready." Can an agent find and understand your products? Can it trust what you claim, about delivery times, quality, CO2 footprint? And can it complete a purchase without a person stepping in anywhere along the way?

For most printing operations, the honest answer to all three today is no. Not because they can't do the job, but because the information that would let a machine understand the offer, product logic, prices, lead times, proof of quality, still lives in PDFs, spreadsheets, or a colleague's head. Agents don't read PDFs the way people do. If there's no interface an agent can query, no API, the offer might as well not exist.

That's where this stops being a marketing question and becomes a production system question. Nobody knows exactly how fast this will move. The protocols are new, some may not survive in their current form, and today's transaction volumes are small. But the underlying shift, machines reading structured offers and deciding based on delivery time, proof and price rather than sales talk, doesn't depend on any single protocol winning. Getting your own data in order is worth doing regardless of how the agent story plays out. It's also, as it happens, what a good Print MIS was already supposed to do.
